We can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity.With a sufficient timezone overlap with the team, we're able to hire eligible candidates for this role from any location in Australia and New Zealand.We're looking for a Principal Backend Software Engineer to join our team, passionately focused on delivering creative improvements for our engineering teams.Your future teamTo be a 100-year company, we are proudly building a world-class engineering organization composed of empowered teams that are equipped with the tools and infrastructure to do the best work of their careers.Engineering at Atlassian prioritizes initiatives that advance AI and support our customers' transition to the cloud while consistently delivering maximum value through our core product suite - Jira, Confluence, Trello, and Bitbucket.We seek individuals who are eager to shape the future and believe in the power of collaboration to achieve extraordinary results together.In this role, you will:Regularly tackle the largest and most complex problems on the team, from technical design to launchDeliver solutions that are used by other teams and productsDetermine plans-of-attack on large projectsRoutinely tackle complex architecture challenges and apply architectural standards and start using them on new projectsLead code reviews and documentation, as well as take on complex bug fixes, especially on high-risk problemsSet the standard for thorough, meaningful code reviewsPartner across Engineering teams to take on company-wide initiatives spanning multiple projectsTransfer your depth of knowledge from your current language to excel as a Software EngineerMentor more junior members of the teamYour background:10+ years experience in multiple hands-on software/technology leadership roles, with end-to-end responsibility through the software development lifecycle.Bachelor's or Master's degree (preferably a Computer Science degree or equivalent experience).Expertise with one or more prominent languages such as Java, Python, Kotlin, Go, or Scala is required.Understanding of SaaS, PaaS, IaaS industry with hands-on experience with public cloud offerings (e.g., AWS, GCP, or Azure).Knowledge to evaluate trade-offs between correctness, robustness, performance, space and time.Practice in mentoring other engineers and influencing decision makers throughout the organization.Considers the customer impact when making technical decisions.Experience in Developer Experience or Developer Productivity.Proficiency in Java or NodeJS.Experience in at least one additional language.Experience in CI (Continuous Integration) and CD (Continuous Deployment) Benefits & PerksAtlassian offers a wide range of perks and benefits designed to support you, your family and to help you engage with your local community.
