Book Indexer Needed (Microsoft Word) – Academic Education Book | 1-Week Contract

Project Overview

I am seeking a book indexer to create a publisher-ready index for a completed nonfiction education book under contract with a major academic publisher (Taylor & Francis / Routledge).

The manuscript is finalized. This role is focused solely on index creation, following Taylor & Francis indexing guidelines (using Microsoft Word; no embedded indexing software, no drafting or editorial work).

This is a short, clearly scoped project with a one-week turnaround. I have a glossary of terms in addition to the table of the contents that will help you build the index.

Scope of Work

The indexer will

Create a professional, reader-friendly index in Microsoft Word

Follow Taylor & Francis / Routledge indexing standards

Index key

• Concepts and frameworks
• Educational practices and systems
• Authors and scholars
• Identity- and equity-related terms
• Develop clear main entries, subentries, and cross-references
• Ensure consistency in terminology and hierarchy
• Deliver a submission-ready index file aligned to publisher specs

Final page proofs or final manuscript files will be provided.

Ideal Candidate

• Experience as a book indexer
• Familiarity with academic or scholarly publishing
• Comfortable indexing directly in Microsoft Word
• Familiar with Taylor & Francis / Routledge guidelines (strongly preferred)
• Strong attention to detail and conceptual organization
