SEO Expert Needed: Scale SEO + Taxonomy for 300,000+ Products

Upwork

Description

We’re hiring a senior SEO expert to audit and overhaul our site’s SEO foundation so we can:

1. Rank as high as possible organically for our core categories and product searches

2. Be best prepared for Google Ads performance (strong landing pages, clean category structure, higher Quality Scores, better conversion paths)

We sell 300,000+ products, with a complex category tree and lots of filtering/attributes. We need someone who has real experience optimizing large catalogs and solving the problems that show up at scale: crawl budget waste, duplicate URLs, thin categories, cannibalization, messy internal linking, and chaotic taxonomy.

We want a strategic, technical, scalable SEO operator.

What you’ll do (Phase 1: Audit + Roadmap)

1) Technical SEO (large-site focused)

  • Crawlability, indexation, robots.txt, XML sitemaps
  • Canonicals, duplicate content, parameter handling
  • Pagination + faceted navigation strategy
  • Redirects, 404s, orphan pages, thin/duplicate categories
  • Core Web Vitals and performance fixes
  • Structured data (Product, Breadcrumb, Organization, etc.)

2) Taxonomy + Category Architecture

  • Audit current category/subcategory structure and identify overlap/cannibalization
  • Propose improved taxonomy rules: hierarchy, naming conventions, URL structure
  • Strategy for filters/attributes: what should be indexable vs non-indexable
  • Internal linking aligned to the taxonomy (breadcrumbs, cross-links, hubs)

3) Scalable On-Page SEO Framework

  • Category page optimization template (titles, H1, meta, content blocks)
  • Product page optimization patterns at scale
  • Internal linking standards and anchor text rules
  • Content placement strategy (category vs guide vs FAQ) to avoid cannibalization

4) Organic Growth Strategy + Google Ads Readiness

We want our SEO work to also improve paid performance. Your plan should include:

  • “Landing page readiness” for top category clusters (organic + paid)
  • Keyword mapping by category intent (commercial vs informational)
  • Recommendations that improve Quality Score and conversion paths (page relevance, structure, speed, UX)
  • A plan for building/optimizing category pages that can double as Ads landing pages

Deliverables

  • Written audit with screenshots/examples
  • Prioritized roadmap (Impact vs Effort) with “do this first” clarity
  • Taxonomy + URL structure proposal (rules + examples)
  • Technical fix list written for a developer (clear and implementable)
  • Keyword-to-category mapping for our top priority areas
  • Optional implementation support (Phase 2), if you’re hands-on

Requirements

  • Proven experience with large catalogs (100K+ SKUs strongly preferred)
  • Deep understanding of faceted navigation SEO and crawl budget management
  • Strong technical SEO skills plus practical on-page systems
  • Ability to communicate clearly with both business owners and developers

To apply, include

1. Your largest e-commerce catalog SEO project (SKU count + what you fixed/improved)

2. 1–2 examples of similar audits (sanitized is fine)

3. Your approach to taxonomy + faceted navigation (be specific)

4. Tools you use (Screaming Frog, GSC, GA4, Ahrefs/Semrush, log analysis if relevant)
